RWANDA: Update on Sylvain Sibomana, FDU-Inkingi Interim Secretary General, savagely injured by the police

RWANDA: Update on Sylvain Sibomana, FDU-Inkingi Interim Secretary General, savagely injured by the police.

Last night, Mr. Sylvain Sibomana was rushed to Kacyiru police hospital because of bleeding and shortness of breath.

He has been badly beaten by police officers inside and outside the Supreme Court premises. In Kicukiro police custody, he was thrown against the wall several times and hogtied to a chair and kicked. Our colleague who briefly saw him in the station noted severe bruising to his head and body and a broken tooth: his head and lip are swollen, and he can't either walk or stand normally. We don't know whether there is a reason to fear for a fractured skull, cracked ribs or worse.

A few of Kigali based diplomats visited the police station but were told that he was not there. This afternoon, Barrister Iain Edwards representing political prisoner Victoire Ingabire, stayed hours at the police station without a chance to speak to Mr. Sylvain Sibomana undergoing police grilling.

He urgently needs an urgent independent medical care.

External Relations Commissioner.
